About Nyrang Health Team

Nyrang Health Team supports the medical practice of Dr Rosalind Bullock, delivering health-care to people with long-term illness who live or work in Canowindra or surrounds.

Supporting Dr Bullock clinically is our extraordinary Registered Nurse Meredith Gavin, who works closely with Dr Bullock on all aspects of patient care.

Our non-clinical team are:

  • Emily Houhgton: our capable, friendly and unflappable receptionist
  • Kellie King: our organised and relentless General Manager and sometime receptionist
  • Blythe England: our diligent Digital Records Clerk, keeping the flow of information going 'behind the scenes'

All staff are engaged by Nyrang Health Team on contract from Connected Well Pty Ltd, a technological and medical support-services company, owned and directed by David Bullock.

Dr Bullock's Collaborative Approach

Dr Bullock's focus is on Deliberate Team Based Care (DBTC) - a model that prioritises patients who are at significant risk of health decline, where that risk can be lessened by careful treatment, patient engagment in their own healthcare, and the participation of other healthcare providers accessible to the patient.

Dr Bullock is available to patients enrolled in the DTBC program for 2-3 sessions per week, most weeks.

Aside from her General Practice, Dr Bullock:

  • is a Visiting Medical Officer at:
    • Canowindra hopsital - on call for emergencies 2 weeks out of 3; and
    • Cowra public hospital - managing the 24-bed general ward on the 3rd week; and
  • peforms diagnostic endoscopy procedures at Cowra public hospital; and
  • attends on a large fraction of the residents at Roshana Moyne Aged Care; and
  • is the mum in a busy family.

What is Deliberate Team Based Care (DTBC)?

If you quality for Dr Bullock's DTBC program, you can expect:

  • an initial Health Assessmment and investigations ordered
  • followup appointments for significant adverse results
  • development of a Care Plan that addresses your health goals
  • updates to the Care Plan if triggered by changes in your condition and/or in service availability
  • a best-effort response to your needs regardless of whether a clinic is available or not

Dr Bullock does not hold a GP clinic every day, or sometimes even within a week. So it is unlikely that when something urgent comes up you will be able to get an appointment the same or the next day. However, we have a calling-session on weekdays between 1pm and 3pm where we respond to calls as well as voicemail messages and SMS's left earlier in the day. Discuss your goals and deadlines with reception (no clinical details please!) and we will find a way forward for you.

How do I get Deliberate Team Based Care under Dr Bullock

Nyrang Health Team supports the processes around admission to Dr Bullock's DBTC program.

There are quotas to ensure good service to everyone already on the program. There are also criteria around where you live, what your health risks are, and whether you are willing to work with the idea that it's not only the doctor who looks after you.

You can become a patient through the DTBC program when:

  • you live or work in Canowindra or one of the nearby villages; and
  • you are formally assessed by one of our visiting doctors to gauge your risk of health decline; and
  • Dr Bullock needs to feel there is a way forward to lessen that risk; and
  • appropriate services from other healthcare providers are available locally (or accessible to you in some way); and
  • you formally agree that:
    • you are willing to engage with the Care Plan that Dr Bullock will work out with you; and
    • to deliver DTBC to you we have your blanket permission to share your health information amongst the healthcare providers involved in your care
    • you will attend and pay for the scheduled appointments which we invite you to as part of the DTBC program
    • you will be honest and frank about your healthcare goals when asking for Dr Bullock's time, so that we can find the best way forward for you
  • a place on our program becomes available; and
  • you are next on the wait list.

To get onto the DTBC program you must endure two waiting lists:

  • The wait to be assessed:

You can get onto the assessement waiting-list by calling us, leaving your details, and answering a short questionnaire. You will be assigned to a priority group and will move forward in the queue with others at the same priority level (priorities above you will likely be assessed sooner). Asessment is an appointment with a visiting GP who will recommend you to the DBTC program (or not) and assign you a formal risk-category.

  • The wait for spaces to become available:

Once you have been formally assessed you go onto a waiting list again for admisison to the DTBC program. Again you are part of a priority group and move forward in the queue when places at your priority level become available. (Dr Bullock has determined quotas that give a mix of patients at different risk-levels).

If you are interested in being cared for by a team led by Dr Bullock, it's good to put your name down as soon as you're sure about it.

  • I don't want to join DTBC, I just want to see Dr Bullock

Unfortunately, you can only see Dr Bullock if she has already agreed to see you. For the general public, this means being admitted into the DTBC program.

We understand that not having a GP is a painful and desperate reality for increasingly large groups of people in our community. Unfortunately, Dr Bullock cannot solve this problem on her own. Thankyou for undrerstanding that Dr Bullock is here doing what she can, and the lack of workforce is the result of decisions by others.

If you are not admitted into the DTBC program and have a health concern that needs to be attended to today, we recommend you:

    • try to get an appointment with a GP in a larger centre such as Orange, Cowra, Forbes, Parkes or Young, and be prepared to travel; or
    • try to get an appointment with an online medical service (eg. search for "online doctors"); or
    • call the federal government's HealthDirect Hotline on 1800 022 222 to talk to a Registered Nurse. THe nurse will be able to give you advice on how to deal with it, how urgent it might be, and what services to try; or
    • go to your local hospital Emergency Department if you have tried the above are worried that something bad might happen if you wait.

In 2026 we will attempt to resource a daily 'no appointment, no long-term care, treat the episode' clnic at the yet-to-be-built HealthOne facility. This will give residents of Canowindra and surrounds who can't see a GP (because they simply don't have one, or they can't get an appointment) somewhere to go when an injury or illness is not an emergency, but should be treated as soon as possible.

Did you know? Nyrang is an Aboriginal word.

'Nyrang' is a transliteration-to-English of a Wiradjuri word that means 'little' (the opposite of 'large', transliterated as 'gabun' or 'cabonne'). It is the name of not a few local landmarks in the vicinity of Canowindra. We chose it to acknowledge the historic connection that Wiradjuri people have with our local area, and also to indicate that we're a small team.
